DENVER — May 2, 2016 — Denver is drought-free in 2016, but using water efficiently is still critical in Colorado. On May 1, to combat outdoor water waste, Denver Water officially implemented its annual summer watering rules.
“We’re fortunate we’ve had a wet year so far, which means our water supply is in good shape,” said Mike King, Denver Water’s director of planning. “But in Denver, conservation is in our DNA, and that can never change. You never know when the next dry stretch may hit, but we know it’s coming.”
Denver Water’s annual summer watering rules, which last until Oct. 1, help facilitate smart irrigation by asking people to:
• Water during cooler times of the day — lawn watering is not allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
• Limit watering to no more than three days per week.
• Prevent water from pooling in gutters, streets and alleys.
• Direct sprinkler heads away from concrete and asphalt.
• Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days.
• Avoid watering while it is raining or during high winds.
• Use a hose nozzle with a shut-off valve when washing your car.
Denver Water also created a brand new video to help explain the 2016 summer watering rules.
The water provider also advises that while the watering rules are now in effect, that doesn’t mean it’s time to start watering. Given the recent moisture, most lawns and landscapes simply don’t need extra watering yet. It’s important to know your landscape and water only when necessary.
